ABOUT THIS CONCERT

Almost everything seemed possible and permitted in 1920s Paris, at a thrilling moment in the city's political and cultural history. The Versailles Peace Conference conferred on the French capital a special status in the eyes of the world. It was here that a new world order was being drawn up, an order that was intended to ensure peace for at least another 100 years. Simultaneously, artists, composers, writers, and impresarios had ambitions of their own that exceeded those of the peacemakers. Their art would take stock of the destruction and, as Kandinsky formulated it: "drag the heavy chariot of divided humanity ever forwards and upwards."

We officially start this year's Musikwoche with inspiring compositions written during and around this special decade, full of both hope and bitter memories.
