ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Starting in 2024, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO) will take over the Artistic Direction of the renowned Musikwoche Hitzacker for five years. Titled, aus Leidenschaft (Out of Passion) the festival's 38th edition will reflect the MCO's own passion for music and their wish to engage in an active dialogue with audiences and the festival itself.
During this time of Lent, Passionszeit as it is called in German, some may feel that passion (Leidenschaft) and suffering (Leiden) are often very much connected. This concert will focus on the Cantata Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe (Jesus took with him the Twelve). Bach composed it as an audition piece for the position of Thomaskantor in Leipzig, where it was first performed in 1723. The evening will start with another work by Bach, his beautiful oboe sonata in g minor.
W.A. Mozart's only oboe quartet was written for the first oboist of the famous Mannheimer Hofkapelle, of whom a contemporary said: "It is not exaggerated to say that no one other than he has accomplished such a beautiful, well rounded and true sound on the oboe!" In this concert, MCO's principal oboist Andrey Godik will take on the oboe part.
