ABOUT THIS CONCERT
The Lucerne Festival Orchestra, founded in 2003 by Claudio Abbado (1933-2014), is comprised of acclaimed soloists, chamber musicians and music professors, with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra at its core. The orchestra has grown to become an international sensation, particularly for its outstanding performances of the Mahler and Bruckner symphonies under the baton of Claudio Abbado, who served as artistic director until his death in 2014.
This Friday night concert features Sergej Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto no. 3 and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony no. 5 under the baton of Andris Nelsons. The evening’s soloist, Martha Argerich, is among Claudio Abbado’s closest musical friends and performed with him in Ferrara many times, often with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
The evening will in many ways be an homage to Claudio Abbado. Both the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the concert’s host, Ferrara Musica, were founded by Claudio Abbado. The city, the orchestra, the venue and the late conductor also share a particular memory: When Ferrara suffered an earthquake in the spring of 2012, the theatre was deemed unsafe and forced to close its doors. Through the initiative of Claudio Abbado, the necessary renovations were made in the summer, and the theatre re-opened in the fall of 2012 with a very memorable sold-out benefit concert by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.
