LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA: CURIOSITY

August 2024

Lucerne is one of the world's leading classical music festivals. As every summer since the foundation of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra (LFO) by Claudio Abbado in 2003, musicians from the MCO form the core of this group - happy to be there again!

During this summer's festival, MCO musicians will take part in four orchestra concerts. We start off on August 16th with Gustav Mahler's spooky yet glorious 7th Symphony under the baton of the festival's music director Riccardo Chailly. On August 17th, a Nordic duo made of Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä and Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes will lead the LFO in a program dedicated to works by Grieg, Schumann, and Mendelssohn Bartholdy, whereas the concert on August 20th, featuring the impressive young pianist Alexander Malofeev, will continue the Rachmaninoff cycle started by Riccardo Chailly and the LFO. And on the 24th, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Italian pianist Beatrice Rana will present you with Clara Schumann's Piano Concerto, a true albeit not well-known gem which they recently recorded for Warner Classics.

"Neugier" / "Curiosity" is the programmatic title of this year's Lucerne Summer Festival, and we would like to share our curiosity for wonderful music with you!
