ABOUT THIS CONCERT

In keeping with this year’s festival focus on women in music, under the title PrimaDonna, the MCO gives a concert (23 August) featuring Barbara Hannigan as soloist and conductor.

In this 40-minute “preview” concert, hosted by Barbara Hannigan – who also delivered the opening address of the Lucerne Festival – and featuring the MCO, the audience get a glimpse into the upcoming performance from the perspective of the performers. This concert takes place at 18:20, before the symphonic concert in the evening.

The collaboration between Barbara Hannigan and the MCO dates back to 2012, when they performed the hugely successful premiere of George Benjamin’s opera Written on Skin in Aix-en-Provence. Recently, in March 2016, they renewed this success by performing a semi-staged concert performance of Benjamin’s masterpiece in Germany, Spain and the UK. Barbara Hannigan conducted the MCO for the first time at the Lucerne Festival in 2014.
