ABOUT THIS CONCERT

Due to health reasons, Joana Mallwitz has withdrawn from this project. The baton will be taken over by Austrian conductor Christoph Koncz.

This project serves as a prologue to the new relationship between the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and conductor Joana Mallwitz, crowned Conductor of the Year in a poll of critics undertaken by Opernwelt magazine in 2019. Besides working with established household names, the MCO prides itself on being an active supporter of tomorrow’s talent. The orchestra will revisit some of its favourite concert halls in Dortmund, Berlin, Vienna and Hamburg.

Schubert’s Seventh and Fourth Symphonies frame Benjamin Britten’s Serenade op. 31, written for the unusual instrumentation of tenor, horn and strings: two works that alternate between an idyllic, song-like atmosphere and ominous darkness. In the serenade, Britten shows his remarkable talent for stringing together a set of texts within a certain theme and providing them with a musical setting. For this composition, that theme is a world of night, sleep and dreams.

Nurturing also talent from within its ranks, the MCO has chosen a member from the orchestra, José Vicente Castelló, to play the horn solo.
