ABOUT THIS CONCERT
For its final tour of the season, the MCO joins with regular partner Gustavo Dudamel to bring four symphonies by Beethoven and Mendelssohn to the 37th edition of the Festival Internacional de Música de Canarias.
The MCO and Gustavo Dudamel enjoy a long and creative collaboration, most recently appearing together at the Peralada Festival in 2019 and to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Cathedral in Burgos in 2021. This partnership, combining Dudamel's energy and power with the MCO's alert and agile chamber music style, is ideally suited to these works.
Mendelssohn's third and fourth symphonies were inspired by the composer's journeys to Scotland's rugged highlands and islands, and to Italy. Each one not only captures the composer's feelings about experiencing these new landscapes and vistas, but they also evoke the atmosphere of the places themselves in Mendelssohn's bright and optimistic style.
Beethoven's work is unmistakeably individual. But his third and sixth symphonies evoke universal ideals: the powerfully heroic, the gently pastoral. Pairing each of these symphonies with one of Mendelssohn's in each program therefore promises to take audiences on an unforgettable journey, filled with symphonic impressions.
