ABOUT THIS CONCERT
This concert has been cancelled due to regulations implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mozart Momentum 1785/1786 reunites the MCO and our Artistic Partner Leif Ove Andsnes to look deeply at two of the most creative years in Mozart’s life, through a mix of chamber and orchestral music, plus piano concertos performed with the same intimate agility and self-directed approach that was the hallmark of our celebrated collaboration during the Beethoven Journey (2013–15).
The basis for Mozart Momentum 1785/1786 is the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 20, a landmark work written in 1785 that dramatically reshaped the relationship between soloist and orchestra, lighting the way for more dynamic communication, dialogue, interaction, and freedom of exchange – echoing the MCO’s own unique approach.
In this concert, we perform three works written during this period, which bear the influence of Mozart's readical reimagining of musical roles: Mozart's 22nd piano concerto, his first to bring the sound of the clarinet into the conversation, the Masonic Funeral Music and Haydn's Symphony No. 85 (La Reine), both led by MCO Concertmaster Matthew Truscott.
