GUSTAV MAHLER: Symphony no. 1 in D major
- Conductor Omer Meir Wellber
Violin Isabelle Faust
ABOUT THIS CONCERT
The annual orchestra project of the MCO Academy returns to Cologne, Dortmund and Essen for concerts led by conductor Omer Meir Wellber and featuring Artistic Partner Isabelle Faust. Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto and Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony are on this year’s concert programme; MCO Academists share the stage with MCO musicians in both works.
The MCO Academy evolved from the Mahler Chamber Orchestra’s residency in North Rhine-Westphalia in the years 2009 to 2013, and aims to introduce the MCO’s philosophy and way of working to the next generation of orchestral musicians: passionate, creative and collaborative music making.
The MCO Academy provides a carefully developed educational model that gives young musicians a high quality orchestral experience with renowned conductors and soloists during the annual orchestra phase. In addition to audition training, individual coaching and orchestral playing, the Academy also includes chamber music workshops which emphasize the MCO’s characteristic chamber music approach to music-making. Complemented by a mentoring programme, career talks and further year-round activities, the Academy fosters creative and independent thinking and offers a comprehensive and modern approach for professional musicians of the 21st century.
With the cooperation with founding partner Orchesterzentrum|NRW in Dortmund as its base, the Academy has expanded to include further partners in the years since 2009. Currently, music students from four additional partner institutions – the National Youth Orchestra of Catalonia in Barcelona, Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne and Colombian Youth Philharmonic – can apply to take part in the MCO Academy projects. Thus, the Academy offers a unique platform for international exchange, another central characteristic of the MCO.
This concert takes on a special role for Dortmund: for many students from the neighboring Orchesterzentrum|NRW, this Konzerthaus Dortmund concert is almost a home game. Konzerthaus Dortmund audiences are very familiar with the MCO, since the orchestra appears multiple times a year on its stage; the MCO’s most recent performance in Dortmund took place in April 2017, in a concert featuring pianist Daniil Trifonov and conductor Mikhail Pletnev.
