The Mahler Chamber Orchestra joins forces with pianist Yuja Wang on an extensive tour to nine European cities in ten concerts.
This project takes place in two parts. The first part, with two concerts in Paris, features the MCO’s debut at Fondation Louis Vuitton. In the second part, Yuja Wang and the MCO take variations of the programmes played in Paris on tour to Helsinki, Aix-en-Provence, Lyon, Rosenheim, Vaduz, Munich, Eindhoven and Frankfurt.
The MCO is no stranger to the Beethoven piano concertos: having worked intensively with pianist Leif Ove Andsnes on these pieces during their award-winning Beethoven Journey, the orchestra performs two of these concertos, this time with Yuja Wang leading from the piano.
This tour also sees the MCO continuing its tradition of performing orchestral works – in this case, Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni and Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite – led by its concertmaster.
Chopin’s Andante spianato, for solo piano, and his Grande polonaise brillante, written for piano and orchestra, can be heard in the Paris, Helsinki and Frankfurt concerts.
This tour marks the second collaboration between the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Yuja Wang. Their first project together, which took place in April 2010, included performances of Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto and his Paganini Rhapsody under the direction of Claudio Abbado – one of which was recorded on the Deutsche Grammophon label.
