ABOUT THIS CONCERT

Broadcast Dates: Deutschlandradio Kultur, 10 September, 20:00

With this concert, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra launches the Musikfest Berlin’s portrait of the great Danish composer Carl Nielsen in his 150th anniversary year. The MCO will perform the German premiere of Nielsen’s Sixth Symphony, the Sinfonia Semplice, arranged for chamber orchestra by Hans Abrahamsen.

Nielsen wrote the piece in 1924-25 and intended to portray the instruments as independent personalities. The concert pairs the piece with Alban Berg’s Kammerkonzert for piano and violin with 13 winds, which was created in 1923-25, at almost the very same time as Nielsen’s Sinfonia Semplice.

The MCO will perform with its Artistic Partner Isabelle Faust and pianist Alexander Melnikov, and the concert will be directed by Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård.
