ABOUT THIS CONCERT

Broadcast Date:
17 October at 19:03 on Swedish Radio P2

Musicians of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra are guests at the inaugural edition of Malmö Chamber Music, the chamber music festival led by Swedish trumpet player Håkan Hardenberger.

This concert, which brings this year’s festival to a close, puts the works of HK Gruber – the festival’s featured composer – in the spotlight. HK Gruber and Håkan Hardenberger, both regular collaborators with the MCO, play an integral role in this programme. Hardenberger joins musicians of the MCO for Gruber’s 3 MOB Pieces for solo trumpet and ensemble, with Gruber conducting. In Gruber’s Frankenstein!!, the artists exchange roles: Hardenberger conducts the piece, while Gruber assumes the role of chansonnier. Gruber’s works are paired with other pieces exploring the boundaries of the chamber music format: Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, in the original version for thirteen players, and Britten’s Sinfonietta – his opus 1 – composed at the age of 18.

Led by the festival’s Artistic Director Håkan Hardenberger, Malmö Chamber Music champions the cause of chamber music, which Hardenberger considers the most intimate form of music making. This concert takes place at the Malmö Live Concert Hall, a new venue which opened its doors in 2015.
