Rostropovich Tribute

July 2017

The MCO returns to Rencontres Musicales d’Evian this summer for a concert commemorating longtime Festival Director and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. 2017 marks 90 years since Rostropovich’s birth and 10 years since his passing; it is only fitting, then, that French cellist Edgar Moreau – winner of the Young Soloist Prize at the 2009 Rostropovich Cello Competition – should be the soloist for Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto no. 1, which the composer dedicated to his close friend, Rostropovich.

The MCO’s most recent appearance in Evian was in 2016, with two diverse programmes exploring the different facets of chamber music. This project marks the MCO’s second collaboration with conductor Gustavo Dudamel, and brings the MCO together with cellist Edgar Moreau for the first time.
