ABOUT THIS CONCERT
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra travels to Japan with Artistic Partner Mitsuko Uchida for concerts in Sapporo, Osaka, Tokyo and Toyota. The focus of this tour is the MCO’s residency at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, whose 30th anniversary is being celebrated with a wide range of high-profile concerts throughout 2016.
In 1986, Mitsuko Uchida – an Associate Artist of Suntory Hall – performed the complete Mozart piano concertos during the concert hall’s inaugural season. Thirty years later, Uchida has invited the Mahler Chamber Orchestra to join her in performing a selection of these concertos, in two concerts, in Suntory Hall.
This tour marks the continuation of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra’s long-term collaboration with Mitsuko Uchida, which focuses on the piano concertos of Mozart and sees Uchida leading the orchestra from the keyboard. The first tour of this project took place in January 2016, with concerts in Spain, Luxembourg, Austria and Germany. This Japan tour is paired with a European segment at the end of November, with concerts in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dortmund, Berlin and London.
The MCO last appeared in Osaka in 2011, with performances of the complete Brahms symphonies under Daniel Harding. In this concert, the MCO and Artistic Partner Mitsuko Uchida perform a programme combining Mozart’s Piano Concertos no. 19 KV 459 and no. 20 KV 466, led by Uchida from the keyboard, with Takemitsu’s Requiem for strings.
