ABOUT THIS CONCERT
Whereas Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony is still treated as a well-kept secret, the Ninth – with its choral fourth movement based on lyrics from Friedrich Schiller’s Ode to Joy – has become a common symbol for unity and peace.
In this performance of the Ninth Symphony, the vocal solo parts are sung by soprano Christiane Oelze, mezzo-soprano Christa Mayer, tenor Torsten Kerl, and bass Steven Humes, all of whom know Daniele Gatti well from previous collaborations. The choral parts of the symphony are performed by the excellent choirs of the MCO’s partner Palau de la Música, Orfeó Català and Cor de Cambra.
In January 2015, the very first concert of the MCO’s current Beethoven cycle with Daniele Gatti was performed at the Teatro Comunale in Ferrara, the orchestra’s oldest residency. With this concert, featuring the two final symphonies of the cycle, the project comes full circle.
