ABOUT THIS CONCERT
This tour, which brings the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Artistic Partner Mitsuko Uchida to major cities in Europe, comes on the heels of an extensive Japanese tour that included a residency at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, as well as concerts in Sapporo, Osaka and Toyota.
The MCO’s long-term collaboration with pianist Mitsuko Uchida, which was launched in January 2016, focuses on the Mozart piano concertos with Uchida leading from the keyboard. It has so far included seventeen concerts in Spain, Luxembourg, Austria, Germany and Japan; in addition to concerts with the orchestra, Mitsuko Uchida has also performed with musicians of the MCO in chamber music concerts.
The MCO appears for the second time in London this year: in March, the orchestra performed at LSO St. Luke’s and the Barbican Centre, in two concerts focusing on George Benjamin. This concert, which takes place in Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre, marks the beginning of a three-year collaboration between Mitsuko Uchida and the Southbank Centre.
In this concert, Mitsuko Uchida directs Mozart’s Piano Concertos no. 17 KV 453 and no. 25 KV 503 from the keyboard. The MCO will also perform Bartók’s Divertimento for Strings, in a performance led by its concertmaster.
