We remember the wonderful musical and personal moments we shared.

We first had the pleasure of working with Pierre Boulez in 2007, when we opened the Wiener Festwochen with Janacek’s opera From the House of the Dead, staged by Patrice Chéreau. This truly unique and outstanding collaboration will remain with us forever. We spent a major part of the year 2007 with this production, playing a total of 12 performances under Pierre Boulez’ baton in Vienna, Amsterdam and Aix-en-Provence.

Our next meeting came sooner than we expected, this time at Carnegie Hall in New York City, when Pierre Boulez stepped in for Claudio Abbado during the Lucerne Festival Orchestra tour in autumn 2007 and presented us with an unforgettably clear and subtle rendition of Mahler’s Symphony no. 3.

We are thankful and honoured that our last collaboration was one that looked to the future: Pierre Boulez led our 2011 MCO Academy project, sharing his passion, expertise and deep wisdom with the next generation of orchestra musicians.

We are saddened to learn that Pierre Boulez has left us. We join the world in mourning his passing.
