May 2016
This tour is the fourth and final part of the Beethoven cycle performed with the orchestra’s Artistic Partner, Daniele Gatti.
In January 2015, Daniele Gatti and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra began a complete cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies, presenting them across four tours primarily in Italy. The first tour, featuring Symphonies 1, 2 and 5, was followed by Symphonies 3 and 4 in May 2015 and Symphonies 6 and 7 in February 2016. The final tour, with the Eighth and Ninth Symphonies, brings the orchestra to Torino, Ferrara, Bergamo and Brescia.
Upon the conclusion of the first tour of the cycle in January 2015, Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera wrote: “Gatti delivers a highly interesting Beethoven, original and without being ostentatious. With the exceptionally strong cohesion and sparkling luminosity of the orchestra, a formation with marvellous personalities, they create a profound sound that is agile, alive and contained, with tempi, articulation and phrasing which bring out the musical form in a logical, clear, and indeed simple way.”
The four stops of this tour, Torino, Ferrara, Bergamo and Brescia, have each played an important role in the MCO’s performances of Beethoven’s works.
