ABOUT THIS CONCERT

On this tour, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra travels to Jerusalem on an exploration of European identity. This project, which marks a joint collaboration between the Jerusalem Arts Festival and the London Arts Festival in 2017, examines the roots of European culture, its identity as a cultural concept, the way in which it has evolved, and its relationship to the rest of the world.

The MCO performs the ensemble version of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, conducted by Ion Marin and featuring mezzo-soprano Lioba Braun and tenor Adam Frandsen. Inspired by ancient Chinese poetry, Das Lied von der Erde touches on existential themes and questions that are both timeless and universal. The ensemble version of this piece was an undertaking of composer Arnold Schönberg; after his death, it was completed by Rainer Riehn.

This concert marks the MCO’s first appearance in the historical city of Jerusalem. It will take place in the Art Garden of the Israel Museum, Israel’s largest cultural institution and one of the world’s leading art and archaeology museums.

This project was made possible with the generous support of the German Foreign Ministry.
